WASTE INNOVATION

In December 2019 Eric McBean launched a mobile compacting service project within one of the largest housing associations in the Northwest. The mission was clear: tackle the escalating costs of dealing with excess waste around high and low-rise blocks. Fast forward to 2023 and the project has been implemented as a service. Its positive impact continues across the environment, tenants, and the business.

At each site visit, the compactor team rotates and compacts the bins to ensure maximum capacity at all times. The also team ensures any excess waste on the floor is in put into the bins and ensures  the bins are accessible for local authority collections.

Fast forward nearly four years and the compacting team continues to boasts a remarkable influence in household waste disposal management.

The Electric Waste Compactor:

  • Amplifies communal bin capacity by up to 50%.

  • Slashes extra waste disposal costs by a staggering 62%.

  • Eases service charges for tenants, promoting affordable rents.

  • Battles vermin infestation.

  • Mitigates landfill contributions.

Eric’s  ingenious solution revolves around creating a mobile waste compactor to increase the capacity of communal bins by squashing the contents inside. The service was aimed at 2000 plus homes in Salford. Result? Fewer missed local authority bin collections, a reduction in costs of external contractors used to remove excess waste, reduced fly-tipping incidents and the infestation of rodents was minimised due to the absence of heaps of rubbish bags on the floor. Not to mention less complaints from tenants about overflowing bins and fly-tipping.

With household waste surging by 20% lately due to a home-centric mindset, this service remains tailor-made for modern demands. Its role in accomplishing environmental goals can't be overstated – fewer trips by the local authority and external contractors translate to a smaller carbon footprint.

Beyond its environmental merits, this initiative fosters work and training prospects. The compacting team created full-time employment for two of its tenants and provides work placement and training opportunities for local people.
